During the film’s global press conference, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, director Destin Daniel Cretton, and producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal shared new details about Peter Parker’s next chapter, one that returns Spider-Man to the streets of New York while exploring the emotional consequences of a world that no longer remembers Peter Parker.
While the film still promises blockbuster action, new Marvel team-ups, and long-awaited comic book pairings, everyone involved emphasized that Brand New Day is ultimately about identity, isolation, and discovering hope after losing everything.

A Fresh Start That Returns Spider-Man to His Roots
For Amy Pascal, the ending of No Way Home naturally pointed the franchise toward a smaller, more character-driven story. After a film featuring three Spider-Men and multiversal stakes, she explained that the creative team wanted to return Peter Parker to the dilemma that has always defined him.
“What we decided… was to make a movie that was smaller, and that was about somebody’s personal life, and that was about Peter.”
Director Destin Daniel Cretton said the title itself reflects Peter’s emotional journey rather than simply signaling a new adventure.
“Brand New Day… represents something that Peter hasn’t quite learned yet at the beginning of this movie,” Cretton explained. “It’s something he’s hoping for.”
That philosophy became the foundation of the film, allowing the story to focus less on escalating spectacle and more on what it means for Peter to rebuild his life after sacrificing everything.
Tom Holland Says Peter Is at His Lowest Point
According to Tom Holland, audiences will meet Peter Parker at the most difficult moment of his life.
“I think you really meet Peter Parker at the beginning of the darkest chapter of his life,” Holland said, describing the film as a cautionary tale about the dangers of living without friends or community.
That emotional conflict creates an interesting contrast throughout the movie. While Peter struggles with loneliness, Spider-Man has never been more successful as New York City’s hero. Holland believes that duality mirrors the lives of many young people today, balancing a confident public image while privately dealing with isolation.
It’s a direction that allows Brand New Day to explore Peter Parker as much as Spider-Man, something Holland clearly embraced throughout production.
MJ and Ned May Not Remember Peter, But His Impact Remains
One of the biggest emotional challenges facing the sequel is the relationship between Peter, MJ, and Ned following Doctor Strange’s memory spell.
Jacob Batalon joked that, from Ned’s perspective, life is actually going pretty well, but admitted both characters still feel like something is missing. Meanwhile, Zendaya described filming those scenes as “a fun acting exercise,” imagining conversations between characters who had technically never met before.
She also revealed one of the film’s more fascinating emotional reversals.
“In previous films MJ was always the pessimist and it was Peter that was always the optimist,” Zendaya explained. “Now that he’s alone, he’s kind of adopted that negativity and she’s adopted his positivity without even knowing it.”
Even without their memories, pieces of Peter continue to shape the people he loves, suggesting those emotional connections may run deeper than memory alone.
New Faces Bring New Challenges
Among the film’s biggest additions is Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle, finally bringing Spider-Man and The Punisher together on the big screen.
Bernthal admitted he initially questioned whether such a violent character could naturally exist within Spider-Man’s world. Rather than ignoring that challenge, he said everyone involved treated it as an important creative conversation.
“I think what we set out to do is to make it believable that the Punisher could walk out of one of those TV-MA shows and onto this set and vice versa.”
Tom Holland praised Destin Daniel Cretton for preserving Frank Castle’s identity while allowing the relationship between Spider-Man and The Punisher to develop naturally.
Meanwhile, newcomer Sadie Sink continued Marvel’s tradition of keeping secrets, refusing to reveal anything about her mysterious character. Although she couldn’t discuss details, producer Kevin Feige shared that Sink’s casting actually influenced which character ultimately appeared in the film, saying the role evolved specifically because they wanted her to play it.
The film also brings Spider-Man together with Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, a pairing Feige called one of his favorite comic book moments finally coming to life on screen.

After taking Spider-Man across Europe, into space, and through the multiverse, Brand New Day firmly returns Peter Parker to New York City.
Kevin Feige explained that previous MCU Spider-Man films intentionally avoided emphasizing traditional New York imagery because earlier Spider-Man franchises had already explored it so extensively. Now, with nearly a decade having passed, revisiting those familiar streets feels exciting again.
Tom Holland praised production designer Charlie Wood for recreating four city blocks so convincingly that the cast frequently forgot they were filming on a studio backlot.
“New York is as big a character in this movie as any of us sat up here today,” Holland said.
For Cretton, capturing the personality and texture of the city became essential because Peter Parker has always been inseparable from New York itself.
A New Beginning Built on Familiar Themes
Although Spider-Man: Brand New Day introduces major new characters and exciting Marvel team-ups, the cast and filmmakers repeatedly returned to one central idea throughout the press conference: this story belongs to Peter Parker.
