Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil is making the jump from theaters to home entertainment, with the filmmaker’s reinvention of the iconic horror franchise now available on Digital following its November 3 release.
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will follow with the physical release on December 29, bringing the film to 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD. A 4K UHD and Blu-ray Limited Edition Steelbook will also be available for collectors.

Directed by Cregger, whose recent horror work includes Weapons and Barbarian, the new Resident Evil tells an original story within the larger franchise rather than directly adapting one of the games.
The film follows Bryan, played by Austin Abrams, a medical courier who unknowingly finds himself caught in a rapidly escalating nightmare. What begins as one assignment turns into a desperate race for survival as a single horrific night collapses into chaos around him.
The cast also includes Zach Cherry, Kali Reis and Paul Walter Hauser.
Resident Evil Comes Home With New Special Features
The Digital, 4K UHD and Blu-ray editions include several bonus features exploring how Cregger and his creative team approached bringing Resident Evil back to the screen.
Game Changer: Directing Resident Evil focuses on Cregger’s approach to reinventing the property while still honoring its gaming roots. The feature explores how the filmmaker shaped the story for longtime players as well as audiences unfamiliar with the games, including the decision to reshoot a scene specifically to incorporate an important Easter egg.
For fans particularly interested in the creatures, Flesh and Bone: Designing the Monsters goes inside the work of Legacy Creatures and the design process behind the film’s infected, zombies, pukers, sewer creature and other monstrous creations.
Anatomy of a Scene: From Storyboard to Splatter takes a closer look at the creation of the Jump Street and elevator sequences, tracing how the production moved from planning and storyboards to the finished gore filled scenes.
Cregger also provides a full audio commentary, offering an extended discussion of the film and its production.
A Resident Evil Built for Gamers and Horror Fans
The bonus material puts particular emphasis on Cregger’s relationship with the original games.
Rather than simply borrowing recognizable names and monsters, the home release explores how his team approached creating an original film while retaining details intended to reward people familiar with the franchise.
That includes Easter eggs, creature designs and visual references woven into a story built around a new protagonist.
It also gives the physical release some additional value beyond simply owning the movie, particularly for fans interested in how the film balanced Cregger’s own horror sensibilities with decades of Resident Evil history.
4K UHD Brings Dolby Atmos to the Nightmare
The 4K UHD presentation features the film in 2160p Ultra High Definition with a 2.39:1 aspect ratio.

The English audio presentation includes Dolby Atmos, compatible with Dolby TrueHD 7.1 systems. French and Spanish audio options are also available, along with English and French audio description tracks.
The Blu-ray presents the movie in 1080p High Definition with its original 2.39:1 presentation.
The film runs approximately 94 minutes and is rated R for strong bloody violence, gore and language throughout.
For collectors, the Limited Edition Steelbook pairs the 4K UHD and Blu-ray formats in an alternate physical package.
